Aureo sale 233, lot 231

This specimen was lot 231 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 5,500 euros (about US$9,158 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1835. Manila. MR. 4 cuartos. Ejemplar extraordinario para esta pieza. Muy rara. MBC+. (Philippines, four cuartos of 1835, Manila mint. Extraordinary example for the type, very rare, very fine plus.)

The Manila mint, little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's, struck a series of copper issues in the 1820's and 1830's. They are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition being crudely made and harshly used.
