Künker sale 386, lot 4752

This specimen was lot 4752 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$36,182 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, 1679-1695. 2 Dukaten 1680, MF, Mainz. * ANS (Raute) FRAN (Raute) D (Doppelraute) G (Raute) AR (Raute) EPS (Raute) MOG (Raute) S (Raute) R (Raute) I (Raute) P (Raute) G (Raute) A · P : E Brustbild r. in geblümtem Ornat, mit glattem Kragenumschlag// DEXTERA DOMINI EX ALTAVITME 1680 Mit Krummstab, Kreuzstab und Schwert bestecktes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Ingelheim), am Anfang der Rückseitenumschrift Münzmeisterzeichen gekreuzte Zainhaken zwischen M - F (Matthias Fischer, Münzmeister in Mainz 1652-1682). GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Mainz, Anselm Francis of Ingelheim, 1679-95, double ducat of 1680, Mainz mint. Obverse: bust right in episcopal robes with flat collar; reverse: quartered arms of Mainz and Ingelheim with crozier, cross and sword behind. Extremely rare, extremely fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. The archbishops issued a variety of gold coins in the seventeenth century but none are common. This is the only double ducat for Anselm Francis. There is also a single ducat (Fr-1664).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.0 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6.91 g.
