Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 44650

This specimen was lot 44650 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1885. London Mint. Victoria. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. A sharply struck and pleasing example of the type, with satiny luster and only the slightest of bagmarks." This type was minted in substantial numbers 1871-85 and is common, altho this date is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 718,000, a scarce date.

Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold.
