This specimen was lot 4279 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $176.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "RHODESIA. 10 Shillings, 1966. NGC PROOF-66. One year type. Mintage of only 6,000 pieces. Very reflective gold surfaces and extremely sharp details makes this an attractive specimen." This gold ten shillings, minted to the standard of a half sovereign, was issued by the white supremacist government of Rhodesia soon after it declared independence from Britain. It seems unlikely that the regime was authorized to use the queen's portrait under such circumstances but the coins may already have been minted and shipped when the break occurred.

Recorded mintage: 6,000 proofs.

Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .117 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-3; KM-5.
