This specimen was lot 3812 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,898. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rhodesia. 5 Pounds, 1966. Elizabeth II. Reverse: Arms. Choice Brilliant Proof." This gold five pounds, minted to the sterling standard, was issued by the white supremacist government of Rhodesia soon after it declared independence from Britain. It seems unlikely that the regime was authorized to use the queen's portrait under such circumstances but the coins may already have been minted and shipped when the break occurred. It was accompanied by a gold pound and ten shillings (KM 5).
Recorded mintage: 3,000.
Specification: 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.1762 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 7.
