This specimen was lot 45624 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "RHODESIA. Pound, 1966. NGC PROOF-67. A brilliant Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." This gold ten shillings, minted to the standard of a half sovereign, was issued by the white supremacist government of Rhodesia soon after it declared independence from Britain. It seems unlikely that the regime was authorized to use the queen's portrait under such circumstances but the coins may already have been minted and shipped when the break occurred.
Recorded mintage: 5,000 proofs.
Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold.
