This specimen was lot 30379 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $493.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Colony - Elizabeth II copper-nickel Proof 3 Pence 1968 PR65 NGC. One-year type. Virtually as-struck and delicately toned on both sides with a tiny strike-through in the field to the left of Elizabeth that likely prevented an even finer grade. Reportedly struck with a mintage of only 10 pieces and as such, highly coveted when offered. The Read Collection." This threepence was issued by the white supremacist government of Rhodesia soon after it declared independence from Britain. It seems unlikely that the regime was authorized to use the queen's portrait under such circumstances but the coins may already have been minted and shipped when the break occurred.

Recorded mintage: 2,400,000 plus 10 proofs.

Specification: copper-nickel.

Catalog reference: KM 8.
