Jean Elsen sale 115, lot 475
Brabant 1636a 2 souverain dor rev JEsen 115-475.jpg
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 475 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €4200 (about US$6,411 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV double souverain, 1636, Bruxelles. Premier type. Droit: B. couronné à droite, une grande fraise au col. Revers: Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très Rare. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Ex HSA 1247. Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV (1621-40), gold double souverain of 1636, Brussels mint, first type. Obverse: crowned and armored bust to right with large ruffed collar; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, extremely fine.)

This type is listed for Flanders, Tournai and Artois but is nowhere common. In 1637, the bust was revised to show a much smaller ruffed collar. The angel face mintmark denotes this as a Brussels issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold; this specimen is 10,99 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., 324-3a; Delm-175; W., 1016, Fr-104 (listed under Belgium), KM 64.1.
