This specimen was lot 75346 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 100 Rubles, 1997-(M). Moscow Mint. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the monetary reform, this flawless specimen features the facing bust of Vitte, famous for his emission law. Exceptionally frosted and entrancingly mirrored in the fields." Wikipedia comments, "Count Sergei Yulyevich Witte (Russian: Серге́й Ю́льевич Ви́тте, 29 June [O.S. 17 June] 1849 – 13 March [O.S. 28 February] 1915), also known as Sergius Witte, was a Russian statesman who served as the first prime minister of the Russian Empire, replacing the tsar as head of the government. In 1896, Witte undertook a major currency reform to place the Russian ruble on the gold standard.... This resulted in increased investment activity and an increase in the inflow of foreign capital." Needless to say, the Russian gold standard did not survive World War One and the October Revolution.
