This specimen was lot 70703 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. 2 Mark, 1877-J. Hamburg Mint. NGC AU-50. Bold detail and rather lustrous, unmolested fields make this steel gray specimen exemplary for the grade. A superb selection for diligent collectors of German coins." Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of three imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen and Lübeck were the others.
