This specimen was lot 207 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 900 euro (about US$1,427 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1772. Madrid. PJ. 8 reales. Primer año de busto. Parte de brillo original. Rara. MBC+/EBC-. (eight reales of 1772, Madrid mint, first year of bust [type]. Mint luster, rare, very fine to about extremely fine.)"
This Spanish equivalent of the bust dollar was struck at the Madrid and Seville mints 1772-88. The SCWC lists the Madrid issues (shown here) as rather scarcer than the Seville issues. All are very scarce, especially compared to the enormous output of the Latin American mints. The bust type was introduced to the Spanish mints in 1772.
