Künker sale 294, lot 4355

This specimen was lot 4355 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,281 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSSILBERMÜNZEN, SACHSEN, Friedrich August III. 1904-1918. 3 Mark 1909, In US-Plastikholder der PCGS mit der Bewertung PR 66 DEEP CAMEO. Kabinettstück Polierte Platte. (Germany, unified silver coinage, kingdom of Saxony, Frederick August III, 1904-18, three mark of 1909, in PCGS PR-66 DEEP CAMEO holder. Proof.)"

Saxony was one of the half dozen states in the Wilhelmine empire to issue coinage on a regular basis. This three mark was minted 1908-13 and is common. A commemorative three mark of 1917 (KM 1276) is the last issue from this state, closing out a thousand years of coinage.

Recorded mintage: 307,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 16.67 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 1267, J. 135, Dav-492.
