This specimen was lot 71060 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Empire. 1/2 Mark, 1909. Karlsruhe Mint. Wilhelm II. NGC PROOF-64. An exceedingly RARE proof, this lovely example displays crisply formed details and semi-reflective fields with just a touch of watercolor toning imbuing the reverse with charming pigmentation. A premium example for the discerning European collector." This coin is from a type issued 1905-19 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Muldenhutten (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F"), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G", shown here) and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This date is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 607,000 plus a few proofs.

Specification: 2.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, .080 troy oz AGW, 20 mm diameter.
