Sincona sale 9, lot 4040

This specimen was lot 4040 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,012 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Königreich Friedrich August III. 1904-1918. 5 Mark 1909. 500-Jahrfeier der Universität Leipzig. Polierte Platte. FDC. (Kingdom of Saxony, Frederick Augustus III, 1904-18, five mark of 1909, on 500th anniversary of Leipzig University. Proof.)"

This commemorative is somewhat available. A similar two mark was minted for the occasion (KM 1268).

Recorded mintage: 50,000 plus 300 proofs.

Specification: 27.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
