This type is recorded for the Duchy of Milan 1786-90. Similar coins with other mintmarks (Brussels, Vienna, etc.) are listed under the Austrian Netherlands. The duchy of Milan was Spanish until 1714, when it passed to the Austrians, who lost it to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, it returned to Hapsburg rule until the unification of Italy in 1859-60. This specimen was lot 30146 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Milan. Joseph II gold Sovrano 1789-M MS63 NGC, Milan mint. An exceptional representative of the type, quite possibly deserving consideration at a finer numerical grade, with cartwheel luster in the fields, a strong strike and almost no marks. Rare at this grade."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 11.33 g, 0.917 fine gold, 29 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Mont-78, Fr-739a; KM-226.
