This specimen was lot 20477 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1793-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XVI under the First Republic. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. The better date of this short-lived type, struck prior to the trial and execution of the king. Lustrous and fully argent, with a few minor planchet flaws, most conspicuously on the king's forehead. An alluring near gem." This specimen is a "constitutional écu" struck at the Rouen mint, one of a type struck there 1792-93. Its divisions were the ½, 1/4 and 1/8 écu, struck in billon. The écu was worth $1.10 in the USA before the Civil War. The 1792-A and 1793-A are the most available dates of this scarce type, the other mints are all rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter. This specimen is Ø38 mm, 29.42 g, 6h axis.
