Goldberg sale 75, lot 2894
Chile 1908 20 pesos rev G75-2894.jpg

This specimen was lot 2894 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $546. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile. 20 Pesos, 1908. Liberty head left. Extremely Fine." This gold twenty pesos piece was minted in Santiago in 1896 and 1906-17. It was accompanied by similar five and ten pesos (KM 159 and 157) in gold. Although the twenty pesos was a new denomination, its weight standard was only 40% of the exchange rate obtaining prior to 1892. This coin weighed 50% more than a British sovereign, but it is lighter than the previous ten pesos of 1854-92. The superseding gold twenty pesos of 1926 (KM 168) was only 4.06 g, a further two-thirds reduction.

Recorded mintage: 26,000.

Specification: 11.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .353 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-51; KM 158.
