This gold twenty pesos piece was minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1896 and 1906-17. It was accompanied by similar five and ten pesos (KM 159 and 157) in gold. Although the twenty pesos was a new denomination, its weight standard was only 40% of the exchange rate obtaining prior to 1892. This coin weighed 50% more than a British sovereign, but it is lighter than the previous ten pesos of 1854-92. The superseding gold twenty pesos of 1926 (KM 168) was only 4.06 g, a further two-thirds reduction.
