from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 44356
SB824-44356r.jpg

This specimen was lot 44356 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 2 Escudos, 1811-So FJ. Santiago Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC VF-25. An interesting and RARE type in which the bust of Charles III (Ferdinand's grandfather) was used on the obverse, this golden minor presents moderate yet even wear throughout, with a vibrant yellow-orange hue and enticingly problem-free surfaces." This rare type was struck 1810-11. The bust of Charles III appears even tho he had died in 1788. This two escudos was superseded by Fr-31 with the bust of Charles IV; Ferdinand never appeared on the two escudos of Chile.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16219, Fr-31; KM-70; Cal-1659.
