This specimen is one of a series issued by the [[Mexico]] City mint to honor heroes of the War of Independence (1810-21) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-17). The program was modeled on the U. S. Mint's state quarter program and has been quite popular. The specimen shown here, honors Emiliano Zapata, whose campaign for "Land and Liberty" was an annoyance to the other revolutionary leaders eager to carve up the perquisites of victory. He was murdered in 1919. This specimen is one of a series issued by the Mexico City mint to honor heroes of the War of Independence (1810-21) and the Mexican Revolution (1910-17). The program was modeled on the U. S. Mint's state quarter program and has been quite popular.
