This specimen was lot 952 in Stack's Coin Galleries sale (New York, December 2009), where it sold for $109.25. The catalog description noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 8 Reales, 1891 Cn AM. Culiacan. Eagle on cactus. Rv. Cap in rays, Resplandor. Gleaming with frosty silver lustre. Brilliant Uncirculated."
The Culiacan mint began issuing eight reales in 1846. The mintmark, shown here as "Cn," was a plain "C" until the 1870's. Many early dates from this mint are rare but this issue is common in all grades. Culiacan and Zacatecas closed in 1905, the last of the branch mints.
Recorded mintage: 777,000.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
