This specimen was lot 1713 in Aureo y Calicó sale 423 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "1814. Fernando VII. Santiago. FJ. 1 real. Graded NGC as XF Details Cleaned, no. 2900515-004. Attractive. Val and Mexía Collection. Very scarce in this condition. MBC/MBC+ [very fine or better]." This type was struck at Santiago 1808-17 in limited numbers but enough were saved that it is not rare. The bust of Charles IV was used on the one real, four reales, one escudo and eight escudos while the standard bust of Ferdinand was used on the two reales and eight reales. The Spanish were expelled in 1817 but the first republican real did not appear until 1834. Some colonial types were restruck by the republicans during the early 1820's; it is not known if this denomination was included.
Recorded mintage: 54,000.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver, 21 mm diameter, this specimen 3,25 g.
