Heritage sale 3081, lot 31102

This specimen was lot 31102 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $8,100. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru: Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1739 L-V AU55 PCGS, Lima mint. Clearly struck and displaying a particular boldness to the features often lacking in many other examples of these cob issues. Yet further, the flan, lustrous and minimally handled, is both compact and pleasingly rounded, which together with the other features lends a sharp allure to this historically important type." This type is recorded for 1710-47. The date is known with assayer V (shown here) and assayer N. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: 106,775 including assayer N.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-7, KM 38.2, Cal-56, Cayón-10056.
