The specimen shown was lot 186 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 240 € (about US$373 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Fernando VI (1746-1759). 1759. Lima. JM. Medio real. Columnario. Muy bella. Preciosa pátina irisada. Rara así. EBC. (Ferdinand VI (1746-59), half real of 1759, pillar type. Very handsome, iridescent toning, rare thus, extremely fine.)"
This specimen is one of a series struck 1751-60 during the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-59). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted only one-fifth as many Peruvian half reales of Charles III as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce.
