This specimen was lot 3563 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"AUSTRALIEN Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign 1885, Melbourne. Fast FDC. (Australia, queen Victoria, 1837-1901; sovereign of 1885, Melbourne mint. Choice uncirculated.)"
The Melbourne mint was opened in 1872 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920. The St. George reverse shown here was introduced in 1871 simultaneously with the shield reverse. The shield reverse was retired in 1887 when the obverse was redesigned to use the "Jubilee head."
Recorded mintage: 2,957,000 (including the shield reverse).
