This specimen was lot 23040 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria gold Sovereign 1884-M Shield, MS64 NGC, full golden mint brilliance, an exceptionally choice example and highly elusive in this certified grade." This "shield" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the familiar "St. George and the dragon" type. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types.

Recorded mintage: 2,942,000 (including the St. George reverse).

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2354 troy oz AGW.
