The first specimen was lot 1032 in Sincona sale 66 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$527 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"AUSTRALIA | misc. Victoria, 1837-1901. Sovereign 1884 S, Sydney. Third young head. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, sovereign of 1884, Sydney mint, third young head. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

The second specimen was lot 70273 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1884-S. Sydney Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Remaining quite brilliant and enlivened, this wholesome specimen exhibits only very light handling and emanates from late in the young head series." This "shield" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the familiar "St. George and the dragon" type. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types.

Recorded mintage: 1,595,000 (shield reverse plus St. George reverse).

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2354 troy oz AGW, this specimen 7.96 g.
