"Victoria, 1837-1901 Sovereign 1886. Melbourne. Vorzüglich. Kl. Kratzer. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, sovereign of 1886, Melbourne mint, extremely fine, Small scratches.)"

The second specimen was lot 22211 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[2] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1886-M. The third specimen was lot 70276 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Sovereign, 1886-M. Melbourne Mint. Victoria. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Emanating from the penultimate year of issue, this charming specimen offers some pleasing brilliance remaining and is free from any distractions." The Melbourne mint was opened in 1872 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920. The St. George reverse shown here was introduced in 1871 simultaneously with the shield reverse. The shield reverse was retired in 1887 when the obverse was redesigned to use the "Jubilee head."

Recorded mintage: 2,902,000 (including the shield reverse) plus proofs.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2354 troy oz AGW, the first specimen 7.98 g.
