Australia 1885-S sovereign Fr-11
This specimen was lot 32444 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1885-S MS61 NGC, Sydney mint. An even scattering of obverse marks set the grade. Devices are well-struck, with flashy golden surfaces on the obverse and a soft satin luster on the reverse." The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920. The shield reverse shown here was introduced in 1871 simultaneously with the St. George reverse. The shield reverse was retired in 1887 when the obverse was redesigned to use the "Jubilee head."
