This specimen was lot 74294 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. 1/2 Sovereign, 1886-S. Sydney Mint. Victoria. NGC AU-50. A limitedly worn and still quite lustrous example with strong details yet present. Ex: Reserve Bank of Australia." The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920. Sovereigns were struck in the millions but half sovereigns are much scarcer. This type was struck in Sydney and Melbourne 1871-87 and is not expensive in worn condition but the price ascends rapidly with grade.
