This specimen was lot 33370 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $1,980. The catalog description[1] noted, "Australia: Victoria gold "Jubilee Head" 1/2 Sovereign 1887-S MS63+ NGC, Sydney mint. A conditionally challenging issue from the "Jubilee Head" series struck in commemoration of Victoria's 50 anniversary of reign, transitioning from her earlier "Young Head" issues to this more regal and mature bust. Full mint brilliance abounds, projecting skillfully engraved devices on this small planchet towards the viewer. Assigned an advanced Choice Mint State designation coupled with a superlative "plus," we note that only a pair of MS64s rank higher at NGC's census." This type was struck 1887-93 at Melbourne and Sydney (shown here). It is not rare but is much scarcer than the sovereign.

Recorded mintage: 134,000 including the young head.

Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-22, KM 9.
