This specimen was lot 2370 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $1,437.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1881 S sovereign. Sydney mint. MS-63 (NGC). Young head to left, date below, legends around/crowned arms, legends around. Light yellow gold, highly lustrous." This "shield" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the familiar "St. George and the dragon" type. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types. The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920.

Recorded mintage: 1,360,000 (both types).

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2354 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 7.98 grams, 22.10 mm diameter.
