Heritage sale 3067, lot 33506

This specimen was lot 33506 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $408. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Australia: Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1882-M MS61 NGC, Melbourne mint. Shimmering and lustrous fields with light signs of handling primarily limited to the obverse." The Melbourne mint was opened in 1872 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920. This "St. George and the dragon" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the "shield" type. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types.

Recorded mintage: 2,466,000 plus proofs, including the "St. George" reverse.
