This specimen was lot 33365 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "Australia. Victoria gold "St. George" Sovereign 1881-S MS64 NGC, Sydney mint, Short tail, no BP in exergue, WW complete in broad truncation. The delightfully satiny fields are graced by a tidal wave of luster. Currently unchallenged at this certified grade level across both the NGC and PCGS populations, sharing the top grade with only two other pieces." This "St. George and the dragon" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the familiar "shield" type. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types.

Recorded mintage: 1,360,000, including the shield reverse (KM 6).

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold.
