This specimen was lot 40430 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,116. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 300 Reis, ND (1663). NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage. Alfonso VI (1656-67). Type III, crowned 300 Reis countermark struck over a type I, crowned 240 Reis countermark, on an undated Spanish cross and shield type, Philip III 4 Reales of Toledo Mint. Old collection number on reverse. Darkly toned obverse. Host coin VERY FINE, countermark EXTREMELY FINE." This type is rare; it is listed in the SCWC as a "type III" countermark. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-18.2; LDMB-011; Gomes-03.02.
