The first specimen was lot 40437 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $5,581. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 600 Reis, ND (1663). NGC EF-45. Alfonso VI (1656-67). Type III, crowned 600 Reis countermark on a 1659 star of Lima 8 Reales. Toned. Host coin VERY FINE, countermark EXTREMELY FINE. NGC EF-45." The second specimen was lot 40432 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 600 Reis, ND (1663). NGC EF-45. Alfonso VI (1656-67). Type III, crowned 600 Reis countermark on a 1635-R 8 Reales of the Segovia Mint. Planchet flaw on reverse. RARE. Toned. Both host coin and countermark are EXTREMELY FINE." The third specimen was lot 20183 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[3] noted, "BRAZIL. Countermark 600 Reis, ND (1663). Alfonso VI. NGC AU-58; Countermark: Almost Uncirculated. Type III, crowned 600 Reis countermark on a 1636-R 8 Reales of the Segovia Mint. VERY RARE, this pleasing example exhibits a firmly applied stamp on a remarkably well-preserved host coin of Philip IV. The present offering is a certain coup for the determined bidder and a certain centerpiece in an advanced collection of countermark issues." This type is rare; it is listed in the SCWC as a "type III" countermark. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver.

Catalog reference: first: KM-19.3 (plate coin); LDMB-012; Gomes-04.02, second: KM-19; LDMB-012; Gomes-04.02.
