The first specimen was lot 21003 in Heritage sale 61526 (Dallas, TX, July 2025), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: Afonso VI Counterstamped 75 Reis ND (1663) VF Details (Tooled) PCGS. Crowned "75" counterstamp (VF Details) on Portugal 1/2 Tostao." The second specimen was lot 21114 in Heritage sale 61381 (Dallas, TX, May 2024), where it sold for $408. The catalog description noted, "Brazil, Alfonso VI Counterstamped 75 Reis ND (1663) VF Details (Holed) NGC. Type IV crowned "75" countermarked (AU Weak) upon a Spain 1/2 Tostao." The third specimen was lot 30003 in Heritage sale 3091 (Dallas, TX, May 2021), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description noted, "Brazil, Alfonso VI Counterstamped 75 Reis ND (1663) VF30 NGC Type IV crowned "75" countermarked (VF Standard). A double-countermarked issue, representing two separate revalidations 25 years apart. Struck upon a 1/2 Tostao of Spain, first with a 1643 revalidation "60" counterstamp, followed by a 1663 revalidation crowned "75." A rare combination on the slightly off-center survivor, exhibiting flan cracks and a chip that is typical of this early hammered issue." The larger denomination counterstamps are well documented in the auction archives but the 75 réis is scarce. The third specimen is not struck over a Spanish coin but a Portuguese coin struck while Philip III or IV was king thereof. Confusingly, additional countermarking was done in Portugal proper in 1663 using very similar stamps.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: host coin 0.917 fine silver. The first specimen is 4.37 g. The second specimen is 1.50 g.

Catalog reference: the first specimen KM 26, LMB-44. the second specimen KM 26, LMB-48. the third specimen KM26, LMB-48.
