This specimen was lot 50329 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 120 Reis, ND (1643). NGC VF-25. João IV (1640-56). Type 1, crowned 120 Reis countermark on an undated Spanish colonial cross & shield type 2 Reales of Bolivia. Host coin FINE, countermark VERY FINE." This type is listed in the SCWC as a "type I" countermark. Altho the SCWC claims the type is common, this specimen sold for nine times the catalog value. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver.
