This silver 250 réis was counterstamped in 1643 by the Portuguese authorities in Brazil. The specimen was lot 23141 in Heritage sale 3012 (New York, January 2011), where it sold for $488.75. The catalog description[1] noted,
"João IV Crowned 240 (Reis) Counterstamped on a Spain cob 4 Reales of Toledo ND, extremely bold countermark and nicely centered on the Spanish host coin. A lovely example and certainly among the finest known. Authorized in 1643."
This type is seldom seen. The SCWC lists this as a Type I counterstamp; the Portuguese ran up to a Type VIII counterstamp before finally deciding to open a mint in Brazil.
