This silver 500 réis was counterstamped in Brazil about 1663. The specimen was lot 20362 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II S00 (500) Reis countermark on Portuguese Cruzado (Porto), better VF. Pleasant fields with sharp features and great eye appeal. Rare this nice." This type is rare; it is listed in the SCWC as a "type IV" countermark. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
