Brazil (1663) 50 reis
The first specimen was lot 21002 in Heritage sale 61526 (Dallas, TX, July 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brazil: Afonso VI Counterstamped 50 Reis ND (1663) Fine Details (Scratch) PCGS. Crowned 'S0' countermark (VF Details) on a Portuguese João IV 40 Reis from the Lisbon mint." The second specimen was lot 21113 in Heritage sale 61381 (Dallas, TX, May 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description noted, "Brazil, Afonso VI Counterstamped 50 Reis ND (1663) VG Details (Obverse Scratched, Cleaned) NGC, "SO" Counterstamp (XF Strong) on Portuguese 1/2 Tostao from Lisbon mint (cf. KM5). According to LMB, the second-rarest host for this 50 Reis counterstamp, a rarity furthered by the fact that KM has no listing for this particular un-crow[n]ed "SO" mark. The noted problems are clear in hand, but easily accepted in light of the heavily circulated nature of these types, not to mention the nice cabinet patina now inhabiting the surfaces." The third specimen was lot 30002 in Heritage sale 3091 (Dallas, TX, May 2021), where it sold for $720. The catalog description noted, "Brazil, Alfonso VI Counterstamped 50 Reis ND (1663) VF25 NGC. Type IV crowned "50" countermark (XF Standard), struck on a Portuguese João IV 40 Reis from the Evora mint. Evenly circulated with a fully struck and well-placed counterstamp, displaying dark iridescence to an otherwise pearl-gray surface." The larger denomination counterstamps are well documented in the auction archives but the fifty réis is scarce. The SCWC lists four types for the 50 réis counterstamp (none photographed): KM 20 (on 40 réis, stamp as "S0"), KM 21 (on ½ tostão, stamp as "S0"), KM 22 (on 40 réis, stamp as "50"), KM 23 (on ½ tostão, stamp as "50"). Confusingly, additional countermarking was done in Portugal proper in 1663 using very similar stamps.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: host coin 0.917 fine silver. The second specimen is 2.92 g.
