This specimen was lot 40428 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRAZIL. 480 Reis, ND (1643). NGC EF-45. João IV (1640-56). Type 1, crowned 480 Reis countermark on an undated Spanish cross and shield type Philip III 8 Reales of the Toledo Mint. Toned and lustrous. Host coin VERY FINE, countermark EXTREMELY FINE." This type is listed in the SCWC as a "type I" countermark. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.
