Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73378
SB223-73378r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73378 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. 5 Mark, 1936-G. Karlsruhe Mint. NGC MS-65. A lustrous and toned example with ample detail." This type of 1936-39 replaced an earlier type of 1935-36, which lacked a swastika on the reverse. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Vienna ("B"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Berlin ("A") and Hamburg ("J").

Recorded mintage: 743,000 of KM 94 plus 2,734,000 of KM 86.

Specification: 13.88 g, 0.900 fine silver, 29 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-94.
