from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72254
SB1020-72254r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72254 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1884-Ga B. Guadalajara Mint. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. A pleasing Gem quality coin with flashy fields and hints of color. The eagle side has been struck with a slightly rusted die." This specimen is a slightly scarce date of a series struck 1871-77, 1881-97 at the Guadalajara mint. Assayer H is fairly common. This ten centavos piece replaced the silver one real struck since colonial times. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. The Guadalajara mint was opened in 1812 during the War of Independence and closed in 1895 along with Alamos, Chihuahua, Durango and Hermosillo.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 2.707 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, .078 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-403.4.
