Brabant 1668a ducaton rev JElsen 115-549.jpg

This specimen was lot 549 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €12,000 (about US$18,316 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR ducaton, 1668, Bruxelles. Premier type. Piéfort de poids triple. Droit: B. enfantin à droite, tête nue. Revers: Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions, orné du bijou de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement Rare. Fines griffes. Belle patine. Ex HSA 9905. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II (1665-1700), silver ducaton of 1668, Brussels, first type, piefort of triple weight. Obverse: infant bust to right, bare head. Reverse: crowned arms, supported by two lions, Golden Fleece below. Extremely rare, fine scratches, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The regular type, issued 1666-80 from Antwerp (Dav-4475) and Brussels (shown here), is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 97.44 g, 0.944 fine silver; this specimen is 97,77 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., 348-2a; Delm-326b, Dav-4473, KM 79.2 (single weight).
