Brabant 1668(h) ducaton Dav-4475
This specimen was lot 990 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €650 (about US$900 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR ducaton, 1668, Anvers. Premier type. D/ B. enfantin à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Exemplaire attrayant et bien frappé, sur flan large. Belle patine. Rare dans cet état. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver ducaton of 1668, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: infant bust to right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Attractive example struck on a large flan. Nice patina, rare in this condition, about extremely fine.)"
This type is listed for Antwerp (shown here) and Brussels (angel face mintmark, Dav-4475) for 1665-76. Similar ducatons were struck in Flanders.
