This specimen was lot 30191 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"[[Netherlands, Spanish|Spanish Netherlands]]. Brabant. Philip IV 3 Ducaton 1631 AU Details (Obverse Tooled) NGC, Antwerp mint. One of two charming multiple Ducaton issues in this very sale, boasting the proud, armored bust of Philip IV enveloped in a vibrant cobalt aura, a consequence of long-term storage after an earlier cleaning. Particularly strong in its striking for a type generally encountered in significantly weaker states despite being seemingly struck with deteriorating dies, with the details of the armor and Order of the Golden Fleece fully discernible. While tooling is apparent throughout, the piece endures fully appreciable when viewed in hand and is most certainly worthy of advanced Dutch collectors."</blockquote> Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the [[Liege 1671 ducaton Dav-4296|bishopric of Liege]] and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1622-36 and at the Brussels mint 1624-36. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4446) and Tournai (Dav-4450). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. This specimen is rare because it is a triple piefort.

Heritage sale 3107, lot 30191
H3107-30191r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30191 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $5,520. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Spanish Netherlands. While tooling is apparent throughout, the piece endures fully appreciable when viewed in hand and is most certainly worthy of advanced Dutch collectors."

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 97.44 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen is 96.77 g.
