Tournai 1631 1/2 patagon
This specimen was lot 1386 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €240 (about US$333 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR demi-patagon, 1631. Seulement 773 exemplaires frappés du 12 novembre 1629 au 22 août 1631. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half patagon of 1631. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, supporting the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Very rare, about Very Fine.)"
One patagon was 48 sols, stuivers or patards. It was roughly equal to a leeuvendaalder but had about 18% more silver. Patagons are notoriously badly struck. This type was struck at Tournai 1622-26, 1629-35, 1639, 1645-49, 1652-59 and 1662-65.
