Jean Elsen sale 161, lot 1229
JE161-1229r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1229 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,042 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV louis d'or à la tête nue, 1787 W, Lille. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux longs. R/ Écus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Deuxième semestre. Provient du trésor de Vendée, vente Vinchon, Paris, 30 novembre 1993, 537. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold louis of the bare head of 1787, Lille mint. Obverse: bare head left, with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This louis d'or à la tête nue is the most common gold coin of the French ancien régime, created when the louis d'or was lowered from 8.16 g to 7.65 g. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date from Lille is fairly common.

Recorded mintage: 304,000[2].

Specification: 7.64 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 7,63 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-475, KM 591.15, Dr/4 № 881, Dr/2 № 605, Dupl. 1707; Gad-361.
