The years 1786-87 are common for the louis d'or à la tête nue as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date from the Paris mint is common. The second specimen was lot 43020 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Silver Louis d'or de Calonne Essai (Pattern), 1787. Paris Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.Reeded edge. By J.-P. Droz. Tied with just two others for the top spot in the PCGS census, this RARE off-metal pattern striking in silver presents an abundance of vibrant luster emanating from the fields, all while hues of muted cobalt and aquamarine provident an elegant backdrop. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Wade Hinderling)."

Recorded mintage: 1,926,791[1].

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier. the second specimen is 4.79 g.
